Australian band Radio Free Alice have announced their upcoming EP Empty Words with the release of their latest single, “Toyota Camry.” A music video featuring the eponymous Toyota Camry and directed by Finn Robilliard also accompanied the new track.
“We recorded it with Peter Katis in Connecticut in a house that resembled the one in ‘Monster House’, a horror movie for kids about a haunted house I watched growing up,” shared frontman Noah Learmonth about their new single. “Around the house were scattered Polaroids of other bands Peter had recorded albums with, legendary bands, like Interpol. Constantly stumbling across these fading Polaroids in the cutlery draw or whatever in the old wooden house felt weirdly fitting for the song – the song’s about lost futures, haunted by the past.”
“Toyota Camry” was also initially inspired by a line from author Mark Fisher: “everyone is bored but nothing is boring.” The track features guitars and backing vocals that are reminiscent of past indie rock greats, offering a nostalgic backbone to a song about boredom and abandoned dreams.
Radio Free Alice has been growing steadily since the release of their debut self-titled EP in 2023. Formed in Gadigal Land/Sydney in 2020 before moving to Naarm/Melbourne, Radio Free Alice is made up of Noah Learmonth on vocals and guitar, Jules Paradiso on guitar, Michael Phillips on bass and saxophone, and Lochie Dowd on drums.
Empty Words is set to release on August 20. Radio Free Alice will also embark on their first headline North American Tour in September, following a run of European dates. Find more information about their live shows here.
