“Oh, Olivia does remixes now?” is the opening line of Olivia Rodrigo’s first-ever remix of one of her own songs, “expectations,” featuring Chappell Roan. The playful introduction sets the tone for a fresh take on the original track, marking a new creative direction for Rodrigo while highlighting the chemistry between the two pop stars.

This remix collaboration actually goes beyond the music. Rodrigo and Roan’s support extends from the studio to the stage. Roan was a headliner at Daisy Chain Fields festival, and that laid the foundation for the collaboration. Roan also hosted the Super Graphic Spectacular charity event, which is a two-day, Los Angeles–based charity fundraiser that features live entertainment, volunteer opportunities, meaningful community engagement, and a special Chappell Roan headline performance. The event marks one full year of impact since The Midwest Princess Project’s inception, and all net proceeds will be donated to power the next chapter of the organization’s work.

Both artists have become influential voices in advocating for women’s empowerment, using their platforms to create meaningful change. Rather than simply speaking about supporting women, Rodrigo and Roan are putting their words into action through charitable initiatives, creative collaborations, and opportunities that uplift other women in the music industry.

In the original mix, “expectations” is an anthem about self-love and self-empowerment. Now, with the remix with Roan, did we just get a new bisexual anthem?

In the verses of the song, the lyrics share frustrations of modern dating, showing how people in different relationships can experience similar challenges. The remix opens up a conversation about queer dating and the experiences that connect women across different sexualities. Roan brings a perspective shaped by dating women, her verse is for the girls who got their time wasted by a girl who kept saying they wanted to be with them but still pushed them away; the line “I’m not kissing any boy that is passive” reflects Rodrigo’s expectations for a partner who is confident, intentional, and willing to make an effort.

Roan’s outlook adds another layer to the song, showcasing that dating women comes with expectations as well. As Roan echoes in the background, “not kissing no boy, no boy,” this reinforces the song’s message that modern dating can be exhausting for everyone. Her playful interjections add another layer to Rodrigo’s frustrations, highlighting the shared experience of navigating unrealistic expectations, mixed signals, and disappointing romantic encounters.

Through their collaboration, the female artists share similar views on how it feels to navigate relationships when expectations are not met, and how complicated it feels to find the right person.
