CMAT’s new single “EURO-COUNTRY,“ (the title track from her upcoming album) is finally out in the world. Following the sharp wit and emotional depth of previous singles like “Running/Planning,” “Take A Sexy Picture Of Me,” and “The Jamie Oliver Petrol Station,” “EURO-COUNTRY” delivers a scorchingly reflective moment. The track opens in Irish, drifting over an eerie, stripped-down instrumental before building into a howling bridge that captures the core of the song.
If you’ve been following CMAT this year, you may have seen a short teaser clip of the song circulating on social media, featuring a snippet of the song’s lyrics: “All the big boys / All the Berties / All the envelopes, yeah they hurt me / I was 12 when the das started killing themselves all around me / And it was normal / Building houses / That stay empty even now, yeah / And no one says it out loud but I know it can be better if we hound it.”
If you’re not familiar with Ireland’s history, you may be wondering what these lyrics mean. The song reflects on the 2008 financial crisis and the deep, lasting impact it had on working-class communities like the one CMAT grew up in. With sharp phrasing and a haunting melody, she channels a distinctly Irish experience, yet there’s a universal feeling of rage about the state of the world that resonates far wider.
About the phrase “EURO-COUNTRY,” CMAT has said, “I have certain phrases that reverberate around my head over and over again - and EURO-COUNTRY was one of them. It’s the title of the album, and the name of the first song on the record. And it means three things to me: It’s the kind of country music I make; the fact that Ireland is a European country run by the euro; and that capitalism is one of the worst things to ever happen to us.”
The music video for “EURO-COUNTRY” features CMAT dancing around in an unsuspecting shopping mall. While it may make you want to get up and dance around too, make sure to watch until the end to see her fountain finish.
EURO-COUNTRY will be released on August 29 via AWAL. Find the full track list for EURO-COUNTRY below, along with upcoming live dates to see CMAT and her Very Sexy Band. More information about tickets can be found here.
