Pom Pom Squad started their Mirror Ball tour last week in Philadelphia, putting on a terrific show, full of silver, sparkles, and – you guessed it – pom poms! Ahead of the tour, the band announced that each stop would feature a different theme, rotating between “mirror silver,” “through the looking glass,” “earth angel,” and “head cheerleader.” Philadelphia’s theme was “mirror silver,” and the crowd was appropriately dressed up, lighting up the room in a magical glow as bedazzled tops, skirts, and even masks sparkled all night.

Led by frontwoman Mia Berrin, Pom Pom Squad are a Brooklyn-based band on the rise, having released their sophomore album Mirror Starts Moving Without Me last October. Their anthemic songs are full of self-discovery, heartbreak, rage, and rebellion. The band’s stage presence was electric and commanding, eliciting cheers and fist pumps from the crowd all night long.

Despite a few technical glitches at the start of their first song, “Downhill,” Pom Pom Squad’s set kicked off with a bang. “Get in we’re going down fucking hill,” sang Berrin, but the night was only going up from there. Their set was a good mix of new songs, and niche throwbacks, covering fan-favorites like “Spinning,” “Crimson + Clover,” and “Drunk Voicemail.” Towards the end of the show, they played “Honeysuckle,” one of their earliest releases, for the first time live. If the cheers from the crowd were any indication, the audience loved it!

Earlier in the night, Caroline Kingsbury got the crowd warmed up. A reincarnation of your favorite 80s queer icon, Kingsbury is an artist I can’t recommend enough – a sentiment that many people around me shared after her set. Complete with bright blue tights, discoball earrings, and bursting charisma and stage presence, Kingsbury’s opening set was over too fast. Highlights included her top songs “Kissing Someone Else,” and “Take My Phone Away,” and a rousing chant of “Trans rights!”

Pom Pom Squad’s tour continues through April, you can find all of their dates here! Check out Zany Wave’s full gallery from their show at Ukie Club below!
