On March 28, Evil Eye Artist Management brought its Spring Fling showcase to The Rockwell. The lineup featured four Boston-based artists: Fire, Escape!; Smilley; Sophie’s Body; and Jesse Detor. Ranging from pop to punk to emo influences, each act presented a unique spin on alternative rock to the enthusiastic crowd.
Fire, Escape! opened the night with an energetic performance. Vocalist Jude Seiner moved between raw, screamo-tinged vocals and cleaner notes, marching into guitarist Sydney Pollack’s sharp riffs. The band’s videographer wove through the lively pit to film clips for an upcoming music video.
Next up, Smilley’s performance ranged from explosive to reflective. He brought an interactive edge, splitting the audience into two harmonizing sections for the chorus of “Rail.” During another song, he gave a nod to modern pop with a tease of Zara Larsson’s “Stateside.” Closing his set with the emotional “Wait,” he invited the crowd to slow dance.
Bubble grunge band Sophie’s Body followed with a set that felt both dark and hypnotic. Lead singer Sophie McMinn accentuated her shadowy lyrics with elongated notes, fast-paced verses, and deliberate vocal breaks, drawing the audience into her orbit. “LASH” bounced between full instrumentals and bare vocals to finish the set with a punch.
Camaraderie was in the air for Jesse Detor’s headlining performance. Amid songs drawn from the emotional terrain of relationships, Detor shared compelling anecdotes about the events that inspired them. Fans in the audience didn’t miss a word of her recent EP Twist At The Star, including the rapid “Sex Dream,” which Detor joked that even she sometimes struggles to remember. Fan favorite “Sofia” and bodily autonomy anthem “Hands” left the crowd chanting for more.
Spring Fling proved that Evil Eye Artist Management is one to watch for up-and-coming stars in Boston’s rock scene.
