In anticipation of her new EP 4PM In The Morning, I had the chance to interview Australian alt-pop artist Felicity about her latest single “I’ll Have What He’s Having.” In her own words, “It’s about wanting to see yourself the way someone who loves you does. Because whatever I’m seeing? It’s not the same – and I’d much rather have what he’s having.”

Ella Bianchi: It's nice to virtually meet you! What is your elevator pitch for our readers who may not be familiar with you or your music?

Felicity: You too, thanks for having me! I’m Felicity, I’m an alt-pop artist from Perth, Australia based out of Nashville, Tennessee and I like to write songs about existential dread and being stuck in my own head. Also who’s elevator is this?

EB: I had the chance to listen to your next single, "I'll Have What He's Having," set to release on June 26. This track feels more like a standard contemporary pop song compared to the rest of your discography. What inspired you to shift outside of your typical sound for this song in particular?

F: Thanks for listening! It’s definitely the most down-the-middle pop song I’ve done in a while, a lot of those production and melodic choices were made intentionally as I thought they best suited the song. The lush strings, the clinking piano, the big synths and many layered vocals are definitely arranged in a hyper pop fashion in this song  in particular, however, a lot of those elements we’ve also threaded through my other music recently. While this song has its own texture I hope it still aligns with everything else I’ve done through the little sonic easter eggs we’ve placed throughout my newer music.

EB: I love the inspiration behind "I'll Have What He's Having" and the idea of longing to see in yourself what the people who love you see because I think that negative self-image and self-worth are universal feelings no matter how far along someone is in their journey to "accept themselves." How has your journey to self-acceptance been, and what advice would you give to someone who is just starting theirs?

F: Love this question! I haven’t found the road of self acceptance to be particularly linear nor to have a finish line but I do know the more I grow, and the more I experience, the kinder I am with myself and others in life, as well as prioritizing happiness and how that looks to me, the clearer that path becomes. Surround yourself with like minded people striving for better that take you for the person you are while still holding you accountable. It took me a long time to realize you truly are the company you keep - I’m lucky I’ve got damn good company.

EB: "I'll Have What He's Having" tackles a rather taboo subject while being so deeply personal, as is true with most of your music. Is it difficult to tap into these emotions? What kind of catharsis do you get being able to write so freely about what's in your heart?

F: Gotta love a theme, what can I say? No but in all seriousness I must say the writing of the songs is the easiest part for me. As a girl with an Aussie accent in Tennessee I’m often misunderstood just from a sonic standpoint lol. Writing is the one place I can therapize what I’m feeling while simultaneously packaging it up into something everyone can understand.

EB: Your lyricism has already helped me acknowledge some of the feelings I was repressing without even recognizing it in the short time I have listened to your music. What has been the greatest reaction you have gotten from a fan who has related to your lyrics? How often do you get these kinds of messages, and how do they make you feel? I have to imagine it's something you take pride in!

F: Wow, that's really special. I mean a lot of what you took from my music are what my favorite interactions about the music entail. I love when I play a random song of mine live that’s not really on my radar and someone comes up to me afterwards and they specifically mention that song or a lyric that speaks to them. I love being able to put into words what so many of us feel but can’t make tangible. Music can make us all feel a lot less alone when we realize we really are all going through the same stuff in different fonts – connecting with people through that is so priceless.

EB: As a fan, release days are always my favorite. What do you hope people who listen to "I'll Have What He's Having" take away from the song?

F: Same!! I wrote this with my best friend and roommate (Asia Whiteacre) and after we finished writing it we blasted it in the car and shouted the lyrics all the way home. I want people that listen to this to have the same feeling. Whether you’re alone in your room singing it into your hairbrush or in a car filled with your friends and the windows down I just want people to have the best time with it.

EB: Your next EP 4PM In The Morning is set to be released in August. It is titled after a lyric from its lead single, "Half Sad." What made you choose this specific line to represent the EP?

F: I think it really captures where I’m at in my head/life right now as well as when I was creating the record. The world feels like it’s turned on its head at the moment, up is down, day is night and all I can do is write songs and watch the sun come up cause I haven’t gone to bed yet.

EB: What are you most excited for fans to hear from 4PM In The Morning? Is there a specific melody or line you are especially proud of, or just a whole song you can't wait for the world to finally experience?

F: I love how each song brings its own texture to the work as a whole to help paint the picture but I must say “Denver Airport” holds a special place in my heart. It’s about the first boy that broke my heart when I was doing my senior year of high school in Colorado. I love how the song starts small and continues to build all the way to the end. The production elements just feel so me.

EB: Aside from the EP itself, is there anything you can tease for this new era? Maybe some new merchandise or upcoming gigs?

F: Definitely planning on playing a lot more shows this year, I’ve been experimenting with a new band set up and I can’t wait to share it with you guys!!

EB: Where can readers stream your music and keep up with you on social media?

F: I’m everywhere! Sorry!

EB: Do you have any final words of wisdom for the people at home?

F: I’m no wiser than the people at home but I do know that it’s hard out here, for everyone, now more than ever and it can feel lonely. I just know I made this EP from a few different places of loneliness, going through things we’ve all experienced in one way or another, and it helped me feel a lot less alone. I hope anyone listening to it feels that too.
